We were up at a mountain retreat with our families. Everyone else had gone to bed, but Scott and I stayed up talking into the wee hours. Scott picked up his guitar and asked if he could share a song. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't what I heard. When the song was over I couldn't speak. We sat there in silence for a while. I wanted to say something, but I didn't know what. Finally, in a moment of profound clarity I think I said, "Wow". I wanted to ask him why he wrote the song. I wanted to say, "I'm sorry". When I finally thought of something I think it was, "Man, that is a powerful song". That was November of 2005.
A few months ago I asked Scott if we could do a video for the song. I fully expected him to decline, but after we discussed it for a while he agreed to do it. Then I got really nervous. I wanted to recapture and share that moment up in the mountains. That is the way we shot it - personal, simple, intimate.
We'll be releasing "The Old Man" Friday May 22nd.
Thank you Scott, for allowing me to be a part of telling this story.
